The Black MirrorMixed Media
Oil Painting: Ivan Boccherini | Metal Work: Maja Tokar
Scrying—the practice of gazing into a medium to receive messages, visions, or inspiration—is at the heart of this piece. Here, the medium is a real obsidian mirror, framed in copper.
For this mixed media creation, I painted the central artwork, while Maja crafted the copper mirror frame, the angel talisman (in silver and copper), and the third eye element, featuring silver and a garnet gemstone.
This piece, now owned by a collector, is not just an artwork to admire on a wall as it could be actually used, unlocking its full potential.
The mirror itself is made of obsidian, a volcanic glass formed when lava cools rapidly. Its smooth, polished surface is perfect for scrying.
The Black Mirror recalls the famed obsidian mirror once owned by John Dee (1527–1608), an occultist and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. According to his journals, Dee used his mirror in Enochian magic to summon angels and visions. Today, his mirror is displayed at the British Museum in London.
